Member Spotlight
Throughout 2023, SECC will recognize one member every month, providing an organizational profile and highlighting the member's accomplishments in the smart energy space.
ElectriCities of North Carolina, Inc., is the membership organization that provides power supply and related critical services to over 90 community-owned electric systems in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia – collectively known as public power.
ElectriCities manages the power supply for two power agencies in North Carolina and provides technical services to assist members in operating their electric distribution systems.
ElectriCities also helps these locally owned and operated public power providers collaborate and thrive by delivering innovative services, including technical, communications, economic development and legislative expertise.
ElectriCities' support helps members focus on serving their community best with safe, reliable and sustainable electricity at the lowest reasonable cost.
In North Carolina, nearly 1.3 million people get their energy from a public power provider. Most ElectriCities members are part of either North Carolina Municipal Power Agency Number 1 (NCMPA1) or North Carolina Eastern Municipal Power Agency (NCEMPA). ElectriCities manages the two Power Agencies to meet their members’ electric power needs.
Cities and towns in NCMPA1 are served primarily by nuclear energy. Only about one percent of the electricity NCMPA1 delivers to its members is generated with fossil fuels.
Carbon emissions from the generation portfolio for NCEMPA have dropped by nearly 50 percent since 2005.
Members collaborate through ElectriCities’ committees, training, conferences and task forces, sharing best practices, successes and lessons learned. ElectriCities partners with members to build collaborative technology and support to use in their local communities. Resources like Apogee’s Energy Forecast, in-home and virtual energy audits, energy education events and TempTracker 365 help educate residential consumers about ways to save energy.
ElectriCities’ annual retail customer survey enables participating communities to gain valuable customer insights and helps them prioritize projects.
ElectriCities’ training opportunities for apprentice lineworkers, customer service representatives and energy auditors provide rewarding career paths and are key to delivering customer value.
ElectriCities provides technology and customer-focused services to help its members better serve customers while managing power distribution and billing and delivering the exceptional reliability and superior service public power providers are known for.
Members can partner with ElectriCities to find the right technology to support their customers. Services include helping deploy smart grid solutions, auditing billing systems and tracking and reporting on electric system reliability.
ElectriCities helps its members engage with customers by providing ready-to-use educational and messaging materials. ElectriCities provides social media messages and energy-saving tips members can share with their customers, energy education materials and support for member community events, and a library of educational bill inserts.
Members can tap the expertise of ElectriCities’ communications team to complete a project that advances public power through education, branding and/or promotion. Recent projects include a welcome kit for new utility customers, social media and PR campaigns, billboard designs and more.
ElectriCities helps recruit companies to its member communities through several siting programs, grants and other resources, and by educating about the benefits of locating in a public power community. Along with increasing the load for the community’s utility, these services improve the quality of life for the community’s residents.
The organization’s government affairs team advocates for member communities on the state and federal level to ensure public power customers continue to receive affordable and sustainable power.
