Landis+Gyr is a leading global provider of smart energy technology and services. With operations in over 30 countries, Landis+Gyr is a key player in many of the world’s largest smart metering and grid intelligence deployments, providing interoperable IoT devices, networks and software solutions. 2021 marks the company’s 125th anniversary, which is highlighted by a growing portfolio of solutions to support the clean energy transition and help the world manage energy better.
The adoption of clean energy and electrification of transportation are creating opportunities for energy providers and consumers. Utilities are focused on modernizing the electric grid to support new requirements and maintain resiliency. Consumers are looking for ways to lower costs and increase efficiency. The next wave of smart grid technology is helping on both fronts.
Building on the company’s long history of advanced metering expertise, Landis+Gyr developed an IoT meter, Revelo™, to provide high-resolution data, communication options and advanced processing power for both utilities and energy consumers. The next wave of grid intelligence will apply machine learning and automation at the edge to help distribution systems adapt to changing conditions. For consumers, energy management applications will access real-time usage data to manage everything from appliances to solar panels.
At the same time, utilities are better able to address their number one challenge: maintaining a resilient grid. Advanced sensing capabilities combined with pattern recognition in the meter provide the information needed to diagnose failing equipment before it causes an outage, while analytics support a much more accurate planning process.
In late 2020, Landis+Gyr announced a partnership with Google to enhance cloud offerings for utilities. This partnership is aimed at enhancing data access, as well as opening the door to creating additional applications for utilities and energy consumers. Landis+Gyr’s open development environment for meters and devices already allows developers to take advantage of these platforms to write apps for a variety of grid edge functions. The ability to access and process data from meters and sensors at the grid edge allows applications to run in real time – a huge advantage for managing distributed generation, large appliance and charging loads, and overall power quality.
As an early supporter of open standards for smart grid networks and devices, Landis+Gyr uses Wi-SUN certified components to build interoperability into its Gridstream® Connect hardware suite. Interoperable technology is crucial to providing choices for utilities and consumers, as well as for offering best-fit communication platforms, including RF mesh networks, public and private cellular, and Wi-Fi.
Whether providing load disaggregation for energy-using devices or automating switching of loads, such as EV chargers, consumers can optimize their energy management without having to think about it. With set-and-forget features, consumers can manage their energy usage, monthly bills, and payment plans, while accessing information that helps them save energy and money before the bill comes. Consumers retain control of their energy data and can choose to make it available to third parties that offer value-added energy management services.
To enhance the consumer engagement features of smart grid technology, Landis+Gyr partnered with Sense, an established provider of home energy monitoring equipment, to provide these capabilities in the Revelo meter. Such applications will provide a direct link, via smart phone app, to real-time tracking of appliance and energy loads within the home. This is useful, not only to provide insights into how and when energy is used, but also to provide a way for users to remotely check the safety and security of their homes.
The technology and automation to transition to a cleaner energy future is here today. Landis+Gyr continues to work with thousands of utilities worldwide to supply products and services that support the integration of cleaner energy resources while maintaining a reliable and resilient grid.
