PSE&G is New Jersey’s oldest and largest gas and electric delivery public utility, serving nearly three-quarters of the state’s population. PSE&G is the winner of the ReliabilityOne Award for superior electric system reliability as well as the 2018 Outstanding Customer Reliability Experience Award. It is a subsidiary of Public Service Enterprise Group Inc. (PSEG), a diversified energy company. PSEG has been named to the Dow Jones Sustainability Index for North America for 11 consecutive years.
Since 2009, PSE&G has invested more than $1 billion in solar and energy efficiency programs that have helped thousands of its customers save energy and money and helped make New Jersey seventh in terms of installed solar generating capacity.
PSE&G has done much to advance energy efficiency, solar power, energy storage and electric vehicle (EV) charging in New Jersey, and it wants to do even more. The utility recently proposed its Clean Energy Future plan, which would lower energy usage and bills, improve New Jersey’s environment, produce green jobs and create new opportunities through advanced technology. The programs PSE&G is proposing would support 22 energy efficiency programs for commercial and residential customers; support nearly 40,000 charging stations to jumpstart broader use of EVs; increase energy storage capacity by 35 megawatts to better integrate renewable energy and provide backup power so there are fewer outages; and replace 2.2 million electric meters in the state with smart meters and support the Energy Cloud, an intelligent energy services platform to make the grid smarter and more responsive to customers’ needs.
PSE&G currently offers energy efficiency programs that focus on hospitals, multi-family housing, government agencies and non-profits, as well as small businesses that are located in New Jersey Urban Enterprise Zones. To overcome barriers to customer adoption, these programs provide technical assistance, upfront capital and on-bill repayment. The utility also offers a data analytics pilot program that sends personalized home energy reports to 75,000 residential customers several times a year. These programs have saved enough electricity to power more than 38,000 homes for a year and enough natural gas to supply 9,000 homes for a year.
Two solar programs have helped make PSE&G the number eight U.S. utility for cumulative solar megawatts. The Solar 4 All® program utilizes rooftops, solar farms, utility poles and landfills/brownfields for large-scale, grid connected solar projects, as well as four solar storage systems that increase reliability and resiliency for critical facilities during prolonged power outages. The Solar Loan program has made $300 million of financing available to help homeowners and businesses develop more than 1,500 installations.
To support electric vehicle adoption in the state, PSE&G has already provided 145 chargers to more than 20 New Jersey hospitals, colleges, businesses and other entities and developed one of the largest EV employee incentive programs in New Jersey. The utility has also partnered with BMW of North America and Nissan USA to offer PSE&G customers and employees substantial promotional incentives toward the purchase of an EV and also partnered with EVgo to install fast-charging stations at five rest areas along the New Jersey Turnpike and Garden State Parkway.
